6/3/2022

Louie had himself a spa day and loving day. Jeanna and Larry spent a lot of time with him. Reassuring him of his safety and cleaning him up. His mane is now as beautiful as it should have been all along.  I strongly feel that a little love goes along way in these cases. We can’t fix his body in a morning, but we can restore a bit of his dignity by cleaning him up and showing him care and compassion.

We have Oscar coming out either this evening or in the morning tomorrow to address his hooves.

6/4/2022 Louie farrier update:

The awesome Oscar came out to address Louie’s awful hooves. His best estimation is several YEARS since he’s had his hooves trimmed. What kind of sick a does this???

Louie has some spunk y’all, which I was happy to see. He did really well on his fronts and was a little less inclined for his backs. With patience and a bit of determination Oscar got it done.

He should feel much better walking on hooves instead of sleds.

All in all a sweet boy. But most of them are when they are this skinny.  I use this time to build a bond and earn trust, show compassion and love so that when they transform with lots of energy and spirit, they will remember who was there for them when they were frail.

6/4/2022-EVENING UPDATE:

He’s happily eating his alfalfa. He’s pooped good today. Has drank plenty of water.  Crazy the things I must monitor in cases like this. He is Doing all the good things I like to see. He’s getting more vocal also, especially in between feeds.  He wants more to eat. His brain says so, but his body screams - it will kill me. He simply can’t tolerate too much too soon.

And just sweet…. how they did this, I will never understand.

6/2/2022 - LOUIE arrives at his new home

Thank you for helping us to assist LOUIE in finding a safe place to land.  HAPPENED BY CHANCE HORSES post on Facebook:

I am completely shocked, sick, pissed, borderline crazy at the moment. Whoever the hell you are that did this to this poor horse I can only pray you rot in hell. You have challenged me and I will try with all my heart to undo the damage you have done. He didn’t deserve this.

Please God, let me heal him.
Louie is here. He’s beat all to hell and starved to some bones with some hide on them. I’ve seen a lot. But this… allll of this damage and neglect. Someone explain how and why?
He will be on the UC Davis refeed protocol. We have to take this slow to avoid refeed syndrome. We’ll get labs done and see where his organ function is. I can’t believe he’s even alive. He is drinking well. He is snacking on hay, most importantly he is safe.

5/31/2022 - And he will be named LOUIE!

Yesterday, 5/30/2022, I sent an email out about 2 horses needing help. Both are severely emaciated.  Both scheduled to ship.  I told you that TIER is not in a financial position to help them because we still have GUS in Oklahoma that will need care for at least 2 more months plus transport to CA later on.  Hay/feed/gas...EVERYTHING is very expensive here.  I asked tthat If anyone can help these horses...please do!

I have been frantically contacting reputable folks and rescues to see if anyone would be in the position to take in the sorrel stud from the Bowie Kill Pen.  So many emails, Facebook Messages, phone calls, hours of worry and fearing the worst.  The worst being that we could not find anyone to help him.

Link to his video at the kill lot:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf2gAXeDa1s&t=2s

It is EXTREMELY difficult to find a place for a stallion to quarantine.  Much less one that is emaciated, beat up, neglected and overgrown hooves.  He can’t even be gelded until he his healthy enough to withstand the procedure and that will take a few months.

One of the people we contacted was Dixie N. who recommended we check with Happened By Chance Horses in New Braunfels, Tx. http://happenedbychancehorses.com/  I contacted them this morning at 6:30 am  in a frenzy because this poor boy was scheduled to be shipped to who knows where today. All the responses I had received from other folks/rescues indicated that they were not able to take in a 17 yr. old emaciated stallion with hooves almost as long as my boots!  (I wear a size 9).

Linda Nemec of Happened By Chance Horses and I spent ALL morning trying to work on a solution.  Due to a generous contribution specifically for MAMIE & the sorrel stud (thank you Kathleen R.), TIER was able to pay the bail price for him at the Bowie lot.  Happened by Chance quickly assembled their team to erect a quarantine stud pen and arrange transport later this week.  They have named him LOUIE!!

LOUIE will need help with vet, farrier, feed, etc costs if anyone wishes to help.  Their paypal address is:  Lnemec248@gmail.com

Sometimes it takes villages from near and far to do the right thing for the right reasons.  When the heart speaks, the heart listens.  BIG Thank You to Kathleen R. Dixie N. Linda Nemec and Happened By Chance Horses for listening when it looked so bleak for LOUIE.

Whew!  Now I can breath for a bit and just worry about GUS, MAIME and all the TIER horses/donkies/ponies.  We could not do ANY of this without the support, generosity, caring of our supporters!!!
