LOTTIE MAE
On 1/30/2022 We saw her heartbreaking video from the killpen where the owner said she was in the worst shape out of a group of horses that came in. She was lethargic, had a snotty nose, thin and her hind legs were a bit stocked up. Thanks to our donors, on 1/31/2022 funds were raised, her ransom was paid and on 2/1/2022 she was picked up to go to Quarantine. The information read:

5/9/2022 - She's Here!

They are here!  Shadow, Lottie Mae & Okie arrived 5/9/2022..  They are in great shape and have formed their own little herd.  They are currently in with Holly and we will see how that goes.  Don't they look great??

4/10/2022 - Looking & Feeling Good

LOTTIE MAE's first turnout with SHADOW!

From Kathy at Quarantine:   Snotty Lottie has become naughty Lottie because she’s in heat. She is an amazing mover I think.  Shadow isn’t bossy but she’s definitely the leader.  Lottie follows shadow’s lead.

She has FINALLY finished her course of antibiotics and Kathy will begin adding probiotics.  Next week, if the nasal discharge does not return, I will contact her vet at Reata (Dr. Sutherland) for her opinion on transporting the redhead to TIER.

3/31/2022 - Vet Visit Update

LOTTIE MAE’s pneumonia has been improving slightly.  She is gaining weight and is looking so much better thanks to Kathy!  The copious nasal discharge she had did decrease quite a bit.  The new symptom was a cough which would then cause her to have nasals discharge again.  After conferring with Reata Euquine veterinarian, Dr. Sutherland, it was decided to bring her in and have her trachea and guttural pouches scoped.

Kathy loaded her up in the trailer and traveled to Reata for the procedure.  We were getting worried as her symptoms continued and it had been 2 weeks on the Baytril.

Dr. Sutherland’s notes:  LOTTIE MAE has less nasal discharge than previous visit on 3/17/2022.  “Significant improvement in tracheal rattle.  Upper respiratory scope shows mild mucous in trachea.  Guttural pouches clean.  Elect to stay the course with Baytril and do an additional 6 days.  Pneumonia cases require longer length of treatment than upper respiratory cases.  Dewormed with Panacur.”

Whew!  We are glad that Kathy took her in and that Dr. Sutherland explained that the pneumonia takes much longer than an upper respiratory infection does to resolve.

3/17/2022 - Vet Visit Update

Kathy transported LOTTIE MAE to Reata Equine Hospital in Weatherford, Tx today to see if we could get to the bottom of why she continues to have nasal discharge after a month of being on antibiotics.  We finally got an answer!!

Ultrasound of Chest:Patient has chronic bilateral nasal discharge.  No Smell, no Submandibular LN Enlargement.  Moderate Distal Traceal Rattle, Wheezes on L side of Chest, Crackles on R.  No abnormalites on ausculation of heart.  Temp 100.2.  U/S of chest shows comet tails bilaterally with small abcess in R ventral lung field.  Going to start on Baytril paste-10CC orally once daily.

Pnuemonia.  LOTTIE will be on the Baytril antibiotic for 2 weeks.  Hopefully, this will knock out this nasty stuff.  The antibiotics she had been on (Uniprim & Excede) had helped the pneumonia from getting worse.  Baytril is a broader spectrum antibiotic and will hopefully do the trick.

3/8/2022 - Lollygagging LOTTIE!

LOTTIE MAE, NANCY ANN & SHADOW were scheduled to leave Texas and come to TIER around the 15th of March.  But it seems LOTTIE has other plans.

She must like being at Kathy’s because she is certainly Lollygagging!  Since her arrival at quarantine on February 1st, Lollie has had a snotty nose.  She was initially put on Uniprim and we had her teeth floated in case there might be a dental issue causing the problem.  Her lungs appear to be clear and her breathing is normal, eyes are clear.  Her energy and appetite are good.  But the snotty nose persists and we cannot get a Health Certificate for her to travel to CA.  There doesn’t seem to be any odor associated with the discharge.

Friday, March 4th, she went to the vet to get the first of two (if needed) Excede antibiotic injections with the hope that she wouldn’t need the 2nd shot.  No change in the amount of mucous she is producing.  On Monday, 3/8/2022 she again went to the vet for the 2nd Excede shot.  It’s early to tell, but still no change.

We have made an appointment for her with the well known Reata Equine Hospital in Weatherford, Texas on 3/10/22 with Dr. Sutherland.  Reata has the equipment (scope, x-ray, etc.) and access to immediate lab results so we might get a definitive answer as to what is going on with her.  They are also able to do a full dental exam in case it is a tooth issue.  A month of going down the rabbit hole chasing this with antibiotics haven’t helped.  So, we are pulling out the big guns to help LOTTIE MAE become healthy.  This will be a pricey endeavor, but should help us to identify the problem.

Rather than going ahead and transporting SHADOW & NANCY ANN on the 15th and then transporting LOTTIE MAE later, all three girls will stay at Kathy’s until they can make the trip together.  In the long run, especially with hay/vet prices in California being SIGNIFICANTLY higher than they are in Texas, it will be less costly this way.  We also avoid paying another transport fee.

Who knows?  We could get lucky and the nasal discharge will dry up before her appointment with Reata!!  Fingers crossed.

2/28/2022 - Off to the Vet again

LOTTIE MAE:  She’s feeling great just can’t get rid of the snots. Kathy will be hauling her to the vet tomorrow for an appointment to get an Excede antibiotic injection.  Second dose Friday.

You couldn’t shut Lottie up if you tried.  She runs and calls (bordering on screaming) until food gets to her.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way we’re going to get rid of LOTTIE's ribs is to get her about 100 lbs overweight.  Her backbone hardly sticks up at all over her hip but she’s still in at the withers. She is beginning to really shed that yucky, unhealthy coat.

2/22/2022 - UPDATE

FARRIER visit:  2/21/2022 No major hoof issues (YAY!)

LOTTIE MAE has improved visibly.  She has only been in quarantine for almost 3 weeks, but has slowly put some weight on.  She was so thin and still is!  Couldn’t get her feet done.  She will require sedation. Farrier thinks her hip is out.  She still has a bit of discharge but just a tiny bit.  You have to look for it.  It isn’t very noticeable.

The girls were scheduled to come to TIER at the end of February/beginning of March.  After much thought, transport has been rescheduled to mid March.  We want to keep an eye on the “on again/off again” nasal discharge that LOTTIE MAE is exhibiting.  It will also give NANCY ANN a full 30 days quarantine.

Also, when the farrier ran his pick along LOTTIE’s backside, she sucked up and tucked in when he got to the area just above her dock.  We are trying to schedule with Stidham Equine Sports Therapy for her and for NANCY ANN.  If SHADOW needs an adjustment, she will get one too.

2/4/2022 - Update-Thank You All!

The weather in Texas is rainy, icy & snowy.  I can only imagine how bad Lottie Mae would be had not our supporters rallied to help us help her.  Thank you!

2/2/2022 LOTTIE MAE Updates from Kathy at Quarantine 6:47 AM

Lottie Mae did well last night except she didn’t eat her meds.  This morning I mixed it with mostly senior and just enough soaked pellet to hold it together and she wasn’t interested in that either.  I withheld the rest of her breakfast in hopes she would eat it.  I’ll go out in an hour and if she hasn’t eaten it I will douse her. She drank almost a full bucket of water.  Manure is firming up.

Ankle is still swollen.  Unfortunately the freezing rain has started so she won’t be getting walked.  She didn’t move much last night.  Once the chance of precipitation is over I’ll move her out but as snotty as she is I don’t want to do it now.

2:10 PM:  Took a nap and woke up to ice covered windows.

2/3/2022 7:24 AM UPDATE

Lottie isn’t eating her meds yet but her nose was cleaner this morning by far than it has been.  Fingers crossed she can kick this.  Energy level is still high.  Everyone still had access to water this morning but we added warm water to all the troughs/buckets in hopes of extending that.  We don’t hit a thawing period until Saturday.  We have about 1/2” of snow on top of a good sheet of ice.  Snowing lightly so I’m not expecting much more of an accumulation.

2/4/2022 @ 6:36 AM

Lottie is eating her meds now.  Nose not much changed from yesterday.  I’m still taking that as an advance because it’s better than when she came.

2/1/2022 - SAFE!

This poor girl!  She has been picked up from the Killpen by our hauler, Rikki.  Her nose is snotty and she is very stiff/painful.  Some swelling in her back legs too.  She loaded right up, but by the time she gets to Kathy's for QT she will be really hurting.  I added the cost of a large jar of BUTE to the Funds Needed for her as we know she will need some pain relief!

More updates coming soon as we have more exciting news that needs to be shared with you!

She stood in the trailer and hollered to everyone for a bit and then unloaded.  Her nose is pretty snotty and Kathy will be picking up some Uniprim from the vet in just a bit.

She has some soaked pellets with Bute added in her stall.  She went for the alfalfa first though.  Her eyes look bright and we are hoping for the best for this girl.  THANK YOU!!!
